Family mediation for women victims of sexual or gender-based violence in eastern Congo.
Mamas for Africa provides medical and psychological assistance to victims of rape and to vulnerable women in eastern Congo who, due to poverty, are deprived of proper medical care for specific gynaecological conditions.
Women with serious injuries or ailments that urgently require intensive medical treatment or surgery are referred to the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, with which the organisation works in partnership. For less urgent care and to give more women access to basic care, Mamas for Africa sends ambulatory care teams to the villages and works with local hospitals.
To combat violence against women in eastern Congo, Mamas for Africa sensitises women and men to stop violence. They also mediate between families when a woman is rejected after a rape, because of the taboo on rape.
Thanks to the support of the New Life Fund, Mamas for Africa can increase its efforts for this family mediation.
